Waterborne Automotive Paint

By Kevin Briggs

Sherwin Williams has developed its line of AWX Waterborne Automotive Paint to help create a cleaner paint system for automotive applications. These paints will also find a place where plastic parts made of SMC, PVC, ABS, ABS PC and other types of plastic are painted..

Many people feel that using waterborne paints is difficult to spray, is more expensive and not lightfast. But changes in technology are coming, and some of the benefits are ready to mix without using a mixing machine and super fast drying times which are faster with simple forced air instead of the need for UV lights or bake booths.

Using waterborne paints means no harmful solvents or dangerous chemicals are necessary because there are waterborne clear coats, primers and sealers.

Spray gun manufacturers are also working to develop better equipment to handle working with these new waterborne automotive paints.

Using waterborne automotive paints means lower VOCs for painting companies, which in turn means fewer regulations to worry about when running paint lines.

Some believe that advances in waterborne paints will become the market standard for painting automotive parts to satisfy stricter EPA guidelines, to provide more environmentally products for customers combined with the demand for custom paint colors.
