Once again sales for U.S. auto dealers stalled this month, primarily due to smaller inventories, incentive programs and a lingering lack of consumer confidence. Auto dealers are hopeful that showroom traffic will increase by August, but for auto dealers who sell Japanese brand automobiles recovery may be a lot slower.

The tsunami in Japan disrupted auto production in Japan, and the lingering effects and uncertainty continue to plague this segment of the automobile industry. Initially some paint color supplies dried up as production was disrupted, but now production has returned to normal with additional plants in other countries picking up the slack.

With the slow down in showroom traffic analysts believe there will be some pent up demand which they expect to show up in August. But low auto company inventories is slowing sales as well, with some dealerships reporting flat sales relative to a year ago.

But some companies continue to move forward. 2 days ago Ford held a conference in Dearborn called “Forward With Ford” at which time the discussed how the company is meeting the challenges of the environment.

In each session discussion included “living green” efforts on Ford’s part, including the use of flower pigmented paints for their cars! Who would have imagined that stamped steel parts could somehow find a way to become eco-friendly!

The quake and subsequent tsunami savaged Japan’s supply chains, forcing silicon wafer market leader Shin-Etsu Chemical to suspend production at its largest plant, while halting production of rubber parts and paint additives.

Renesas Electronics Corporation, who manufactures these chips and paint additives, has been shifting production away from Japan to other plants in Asia, including plants in Singapore.

The lack of chips and paint additives has caused automobile manufacturers to cut their production estimates in half and has created a bottleneck in the supply chain for them.

Renesas hopes to have the problem resolved by the end of September, 1 month earlier than originally projected.

The world continues to experience the effects of the devastating Tsunami that struck Japan and has caused disruptions in the world wide supply chain of automotive parts and paint additives.
